The Chlorination of Water

چکیده
Chlorine is most readily available in the form of chloride of lime (bleaching powder), which can readily be obtained commercially. This, if freshly made, should contain 33 per cent, of free or active chlorine. It loses its efficacy on keeping, especially during hot weather; but this loss may be retarded by the addition of 25 per cent, of quicklime. Samples of the bleaching powder used should be examined by a chemist to see that the proper amount of chlorine is present. Any deficiency in strength may be counteracted by an increased dose. In order to be sure that all infective organisms are killed, the chloride of lime must be added to the water in such quantity that free chlorine will be available to

According to the reports of world health organization (WHO), 80 percent of human diseases are due to contaminated water either for drinking or sanitation. International water sanitation program says that 50 percent of people across the world have no access to healthy water and 75 percent of the third world population do not have water for sanitation. The present semi experimental study aims at...

This study evaluated user preferences among three alternative in-home water treatment technologies suitable for households relying on trucked water in El Paso County, Texas, which is on the border with Mexico. The three technologies were: chlorination of household storage tanks, small-scale batch chlorination, and point-of-use ultraviolet disinfection. Fifteen households used each of the three ...
متن کاملWater Chlorination. Part 2. Searching for solutions in troubled waters -- A worldwide perspective
Last week we reviewed the history and current use of chlorination in the treatment of drinking water. Our discussion highlighted a number of potential risks associated with chlorine and some of its reaction products. 1 But what are the alternative methods currently under study for disinfecting public water supplies? Which organizations in the US and abroad are concerned with chlorination and wa...
متن کاملHow effective is intermittent chlorination to control adult mussel fouling in cooling water systems?
Mussel control in cooling water systems is generally achieved by means of chlorination. Chlorine is applied continuously or intermittently, depending on cost and discharge criteria. In this paper, we examined whether mussels will be able to survive intermittent chlorination because of their ability to close their valves during periods of chlorination. Experiments were carried out using three co...
متن کاملOriginal Contribution Chlorination Disinfection By-products in Drinking Water and the Risk of Adult Leukemia in Canada
The authors conducted a population-based case-control study of 1,068 incident leukemia cases and 5,039 controls aged 20–74 years during 1994–1997 to examine the association between exposure to drinking water chlorination disinfection by-products and adult leukemia risk in Canada. Residence and drinking water source histories and data from municipal water supplies were used to estimate individua...
